Persistent Real Exchange Rates

چکیده
Three features of the international exchange rate data that are widely known are: (a) a high correlation between bilateral nominal and real exchange rates; (b) real exchange rate movements are highly persistent; and (c) real exchange rates are highly volatile. This paper attempts a joint, albeit partial, rationalization of these facts in an environment with no staggered contracts and where prices are preset for only one quarter. There are two key innovations in the paper. First, we augment a standard two-country open economy model with learning-by-doing in production at the firm level. This induces monopolistically competitive firms to endogeneize the productivity effect of their price setting behavior. Specifically, firms endogenously choose not to adjust prices by the full proportion of a positive monetary shock in order to take advantage of the productivity benefits of higher production. Second, we introduce habits in leisure. This makes the labor supply decision dynamic and adds an additonal source of propagation. We show that the calibrated model can quantitatively reproduce significant fractions of the aforementioned facts. Moreover, as in the data, the model also produces a positive correlation between the terms of trade and the nominal exchange rate.

The purpose of this paper is to study the main determinants of the bilateral real exchange rates for major oil exporting countries vis-à-vis the US dollar. Taking into account the impact of the real oil prices on real exchange rates, it may be observed that oil prices play a significant part in determining the terms of trade. In addition to the real oil price, two other fundamental factors that...
متن کاملCan Sticky Price Models Generate Volatile and Persistent Real Exchange Rates?
The central puzzle in international business cycles is that fluctuations in real exchange rates are volatile and persistent. We quantify the popular story for real exchange rate fluctuations: they are generated by monetary shocks interacting with sticky goods prices. If prices are held fixed for at least one year, risk aversion is high, and preferences are separable in leisure, then real exchan...
متن کاملA new approach to estimating equilibrium exchange rates for small open economies: The case of Canada
This paper proposes a new approach to estimating equilibrium exchange rates for small open economies. We set up a simple structural model of output, the rate of inflation and the real exchange rate. These observed variables are explained by unobserved equilibrium rates as well as unobserved transitory components in output and the exchange rate. Using Canadian data over 1974-2008 we jointly esti...

One of the global economic crisis is the price fluctuations of oil.Crude oil prices and exchange rates are two important factors in the oil-importing countries. This study examines the impact of real oil prices and exchange rates on the price of petroleum products in oil-importing countries1 using the data panel method, based on annual data provided by the World Bank site over the period 2000-2...
